Which comes first? Correct blowing or correct embouchure?
It would seem natural and self-evident to first show beginning hornists how to form their lips into a workable embouchure, before encouraging them to make their first sounds by blowing through it. It’s what countless teachers around the world do.
First the embouchure, then the air. Where is the problem with that?
The problem is that in no time at all, this necessary first pedagogical step can become a dangerous misconception with long lasting negative implications.
My biggest concern in this area is that, ever afterwards, too many students and teachers continue to put “the cart before the horse”—to use yet another famous metaphor. By this I mean that after the basics of embouchure position are understood, students continue to attempt to establish or maintain “good” embouchures before they attempt to blow any air through them, often insisting exclusively on visual observation to judge the correctness of the set-up—irrespective of what kind of sound is produced!
