Chapter 1 – Complication

She woke to a nauseous feeling Saturday morning. Quinn Hunter swung her legs out of bed, before halting all other activity. She raised a hand to her mouth, dark eyes gazing at the floor considering, before her stomach gave a lurch, and she was bolting across her apartment to the bathroom.

She knelt before the toilet bowl in the aftermath, shaking hands parting and pushing back her thick chestnut hair continuously, as if it was some sort of ritual. She stood eventually and flushed, before moving to consider her reflection in the mirror. Her face, round and youthful-looking, even into early adulthood, appeared fuller than usual. There were dark circles beneath her wide set eyes that she would need to cover with makeup before she went out.

She reached beneath her shirt to cup her breasts. They felt heavier than usual, and when she had disrobed this past week they had looked fuller and rounder, like her face.

And, of course, she was late.

The barroom of the lodge was packed when Quinn slipped in through the front door one afternoon a week later, but this wasn't unusual. The Great Bear Lodge, despite offering accommodations to the occasional trucker and tourist that trickled in, the lodge was the main place that the locals preferred to converge.

She walked to the bar virtually unnoticed and slipped into her usual stool. Any person, visitor or local, could see that the room was clearly divided down the middle: on the left side, the side of the invisible line that Quinn sat on, smaller, darker-haired families milled about, conversing and laughing. There were a few juveniles running underfoot, and more than a few poker hands that looked to be well underway. Above the framed photographs of the town's oldest families that lined the wall was the mounted, moldering head of a black bear.

On the right side of the barroom, the mood shifted. Thick-set men and women smoked cigars and shot pool; there was a storm coming, but none of them looked dressed or even passingly concerned for the weather. Aside from sizeable claw marks raked into the wooden planks of the wall, the right side of the room bore no decorations save for the mounted head of a grizzly bear.

Thus were the lines drawn in Quinn's town.

The barroom was the no-man's land in an age-old dispute, and the bar itself was Switzerland. Quinn preferred it there for a lot of reasons.

"Hey Quinn. Haven't seen you around in a while."

Rory Fletcher leaned casually behind the bar, polishing the same glass he had been toweling down when she came in. You could tell just by looking at him what side of the line Rory fell on: tall, broad-shouldered but not burly, and definitely not as grizzled as some of the other Grizzly Weres, there was still no mistaking the formidable strength of his bloodline.
