The Bridge of Dee, Aberdeen, as it is today. (Author’s collection)
For most of the next five years, Aberdeen was garrisoned by Covenanter troops. Meanwhile, the Marquis of Montrose became disillusioned with the extremist Covenanters, changed allegiance and effectively restarted civil war on the Royalists’ behalf in 1644. With a combined force of Irish Catholics and Highlanders, he marched north and crossed the Dee to the west of Aberdeen. Montrose sent a herald and a drummer boy into the burgh with a note requesting surrender. The Provost, closely watched by Covenanter officers, was powerless to comply. Montrose was infuriated when a Covenanter musketeer shot the drummer boy dead as he returned to the Royalist lines.
