A heavy knit fabric dragging over my hands startles me. I gasp and jolt upright. The weight of the fabric constricts me, locking my limbs to my chest. I can’t open my eyes, but I swear I’m blinking.

“Sorry. Was trying to do the opposite,” Zeno says from somewhere in front of me. “I marked your place in the book and left it on the shelf.”

A quake thrums under my skin. I fell asleep in the library. Zeno knows what I was reading.

Oh fuck. He knows I’m doubting him.

When an abuser finds out you’ve caught onto their tactics, that’s when rage takes over, and they put a pause on hiding what they truly are.

A tear slips down my cheek. I revert into the woman I swore I’d never become again. The one who apologizes and accepts fault when they’ve done nothing wrong so they can see another day. The one who gives in because too many noes lead to worse demands.

“I’m sorry. I-I shouldn’t have touched your books with-without asking.”

“You don’t need my permission. You are free to read whatever you’d like, whenever you’d like.” There’s an air of sternness to his tone.

I nod as if he can see me. The library is nearly pitch black. There are vague outlines of some furniture, and a light in the distance I suspect is coming from the main room upstairs. There is nowhere to escape from him. But the bedroom is at least away from the scene of my not crimes.

My toes wiggle free. I shuffle onto my feet and bundle the blanket in my arms. I take a cautious step in the direction opposite of where his voice came from. I run my fingertips over furniture to guide me to the stairs. Sucking in deep breaths doesn’t dampen my fear. I tell myself that he didn’t sound angry. That he hasn’t accused me of anything. That he found me reading, not repacked luggage or a wad of cash meant for a security deposit.

I make it up the stairs and keep my head down as I enter his quarters. I don’t hear him following me, but I know he’s nearby. A small fire crackles in the stone fireplace. An open bottle of whiskey sits on the floor next to several fresh flowers and a wadded-up silk sheet.

Oh no. What is this? What time is it? Was he expecting me?

My heart pounds against my chest, and my vision goes spotty. Each lungful of air is less potent than the last.

“The things I couldn’t have had in captivity help me stay in the present, reminding me I can’t be there anymore.”

I startle and spin around to face Zeno.

“Although, I hadn’t noticed what picture they paint out of context,” he murmurs as he walks around me in a wide circle. He sits down, with his knees bent and feet flat, before the fire and takes a swig from the whiskey bottle.

I take another look at the objects. Clarity washes over me like cold water as my mind matches his words to what’s on the floor.
