Katherine waited impatiently outside of Lex’s house. She was already feeling stupid, already regretting her decision to come by tonight.

Her date with Will had gone well—really well. He had been intelligent, sweet and attentive. At the end of the date he had been a perfect gentleman.

She frowned. Yeah? Why had he been a perfect gentleman? Didn’t he find her attractive? Wasn’t he even the slightest bit interested in her? He hadn’t even tried to kiss her.

She shook her head to clear it. It didn’t matter. It wasn’t like she was going to go out with him again. It was ridiculous really—she was dead. That fact in itself made the possibility of her continuing to date Will a total implausibility.

The door swung open.

Katherine barreled in. “Do you know you’re a total asshole? It’s completely your fault. I was on a perfectly nice date, with a perfectly nice man tonight and all I could think of was you. I half expected you to jump out of the shadows. I mean, it’s ridiculous.

I should be having wild monkey sex with the nice man and instead I’m here … ranting at you, you infuriating…” She broke off and gasped. “Uhm, you’re not Lex.”

Fabin smiled brilliantly. “No, although I’m infinitely better looking.” He took Katherine’s hand and kissed it. “Fabin Montifore at your service.”

Katherine swallowed. The man kissing her hand was gorgeous. Okay, perhaps he wasn’t as gorgeous as Lex, but he came pretty close. He had thick black hair and dark, dark eyes. His body was quite magnificent and it was currently housed in a wickedly sharp three-piece suit.

“Uh, hi, where’s Lex.”

Fabin’s eyebrow rose. “Pardon?”

“Where’s Lex, Mr. Dead Guy?”

“Right behind you.” Lex’s voice caressed her ear.

Katherine jumped. “Holy shit. Don’t do that. You can’t just sneak up on people like that, Lex. You could have given me a heart attack.”

Lex bit back a smile. Fabin wasn’t so fortunate. He began to laugh, and laugh hard.

“My love … you can’t have a heart attack.”

She hit Lex on the shoulder and was pleased when he winced. It seemed as if she was getting stronger. Cool. “I know that, you jerk. I was just saying … you could have given me a heart attack,” Katherine frowned, “If I was alive that is…” Her voice dropped off.

“She is adorable, Lexarius. And quite beautiful.” Fabin came to stand beside Katherine.

Katherine drew back. “Uhm, have you ever heard of personal space, mister?”

“What?” Fabin asked.

“Personal space,” Katherine muttered, “You’re like—in mine.”

Lex grabbed Katherine by her arm and began to drag her down the hall. “What are you doing here, my love?”

Katherine tried to pry Lex’s hand off of her arm, but found that his fingers were holding strong. “Hey, hey! Do you mind?”

“Yes, Kat, I do.”

“Don’t manhandle me, Lex.”

“What are you doing here? Not that I am not overjoyed to have your company, but were you not on your … date?” Lex spat out that last word as if it were poison.

Katherine frowned. “I was. It was great. But…”

“But?”

“But … well … hey, it’s none of your business.
