CHAPTER EIGHT

LIZ

Marius opens the door for me, and I take his hand as he helps me out onto the dirt. He wasn’t joking when he said it would be hot here, and in the arena, there’s zero shade. The sun beats down on me, and I already know I should’ve had more water. My dress immediately begins to stick to my skin. Marius takes my hand, and we walk to where the other people are gathered. Shielding my eyes with my free hand, I scan their faces for any paranormal features, but they look like humans. Perhaps they are. They’re all wearing beige colors, and they’re mostly in drapey, loose warm weather clothing that speaks of a different culture.

We stop a few feet away, and to my surprise, all five of the people here drop down to their knees before Marius. My eyebrows shoot up as I look over at him, but he has a mask of indifference plastered on his beautiful face.

“Luciano, Sofia, Isabel, Augustine, Ciro,” he says, by way of greeting. “I’d like to introduce you to my fiancée,” he adds.

All five of them dip their heads further, and none of them look up at me. Their dedication impresses me, especially since the women are wearing skirts, and their knees must be screaming in pain from kneeling in the grit.

“You may rise,” he instructs, and all five of them stand without so much as a brushing off their now-dirty knees. They all watch Marius. “I assume all is well in Adeñata.”

The man on the left nods once. “It is, my king.”

King?

“And the issue you were all having last month… it has been taken care of?”

One of the other men answers, “Yes, Your Majesty. It has been taken care of.” It’s then that I realize none of the women have looked up—none of them have so much as moved, their bodies still and unmoving.

The third man looks up at Marius, and then he pins his gaze on me. My blood cools when our eyes meet, because his eyes don’t have pupils.

They’re just pure black.

I falter a bit, and Marius tugs me up discreetly so that I don’t look like I’m about to faint from the heat.

“Your fiancée,” he says, his voice sounding… harmonious. Like three different voices are coming out at once. “Last time we saw you, there was no mention of a fiancée. How did you two meet?”

My eyes go to the women, who are still looking at the ground.

Adeñata is unlike any city, Liz. They have… ideas about how women should act.

Fuck that.

“I got drunk, and we banged in the bathroom of a bar,” I say cheerily. Both women’s lips turn up ever so slightly, but the third man glares at me as I give him a simpering smile. Marius coughs and squeezes my hand so tightly that I nearly cry out.

“She’s not wrong, Ciro. We met at a bar. I proposed shortly after.”
