‘OKAY, STANDBY, STANDBY. Looks like he’s stopped. Southside close to Queen’s Park. We’re moving up now.’ Max spoke into the radio mic that was hidden in the light in the roof of the car which was linked to the car’s radio. Holding the iPad, he looked at the pulsing blue dot on the map, indicating where the Audi was parked, just two streets across.

The journey south had been unremarkable, with Luigi driving at a sedate pace down the A9 and taking the most direct route to the south of Glasgow. He never seemed to practise any anti-surveillance, such as sudden stops, back doubles or circumnavigation of roundabouts. He just drove steadily, within the speed limits, and they followed from a distance using the tracker secreted on the underside of the car, never getting within line of sight of the big Audi.

Norma’s voice came out of the speakers, the smile evident even over the airwaves. ‘Update from phone intelligence, he’s been using the phone. He’s messaged a number he’s called or messaged several times in the past on previous SIMs. Unregistered pre-pay phone, but open-source intelligence links it to several Glasgow-based prostitutes advertising on an adult services website. I’m digging into it now, and checks on the number have been requested fast time.’ Norma sounded particularly pleased with herself, which was reasonable, thought Max.

‘Brilliant work, Norma. In awe as always.’

‘Ah, don’t fucking say that, Max. Her head is the size of a fucking hoose already, for just poncing about on a computer whilst I did all the bloody driving,’ came Ross’s voice, crackling through the speakers.

‘Do we have a timescale?’ said Max, chuckling.

‘No, but hopefully pretty quick,’ said Norma.

‘Not quick enough. We need an address, now. He’s clearly visiting Toka and we need to catch them together to sew this bloody thing up.’

‘What do you suggest?’ said Ross.

‘I need eyes on him. Put him to an address and we can bash the doors in first thing; there could be victims in there right now.’ Max turned to Janie. ‘Drop me at the bottom of the road where the Audi’s parked.’

‘You sure? He’s met you and you want a walk past?’

‘Aye, come on, let’s get moving.’

Janie nodded, engaged the automatic gears and pulled off.

‘We need to put him to an address now. If this is a brand-new brothel, then intelligence won’t take us there. They could have under-age girls working in there now, Janie. We can’t let that happen.’ Max reached round, dragged a rucksack into the front seat and pulled out a stained and dishevelled cap, together with a pair of glasses. He fit the cap low on his head and slotted the spectacles onto his nose. He delved back into the rucksack and took out a battered and stained windcheater jacket, the type that runners wear in inclement weather.

‘That jacket looks bogging, Max. You’ll look like a bloody jakey,’ said Janie.

‘Aye, that’s the point. Let me out here,’ said Max, already reaching for the door handle of the car as Janie slowed at the end of the road where the tracker continued to pulse.
