Chapter 33

“Where is his van parked?” Renz asked.

“Just before the outer gate. We’ll pass it when we leave,” Brandon said.

“You know that guy is full of shit, right? He’s hiding something. I need to call Taft and let her know that something suspicious is going on. I bet my bottom dollar that with warrants for Seffner’s phone and van, we’ll find Jade.”

“There it is.” Brandon pointed, and they turned in the direction of the parked van. “Today is day two, so Taft better expedite that warrant and fast.”

They took a long hard look at the vehicle to see if anything stood out, using a hands-off visual search. Renz knelt at the rear driver’s side, wiped the caked mud from the tire, then glanced at the other three.

“How do the tires of a vehicle get caked with mud on asphalt and concrete streets?”

John picked a clump of dirt out from the tread and ground it between his fingers. “With a few pine needles stuck in the mud.” He raised his brows at Renz. “You haven’t made that call yet? We need a tracking device put on this van.”

Brandon cut in. “I’d say we need several of them, especially if Mr. Seffner intends to meet up with the cons. Knowing where they are or where they go should lead us right to Jade.”

“If you two have nothing on your plate right now, I’d head back to St. Paul, find a police supply store, and pick up two or three of those tracking devices. Taft will okay it, maybe reluctantly, but she will. I’ll have Jack pick me up, and we’ll go from there. We’ll meet at the cabin when you get back or at the hotel—your call. I want Taft to expedite those warrants, and I want to know if Jack, Amber, and Kate found any footage of that van in the area after they pulled out of the hotel’s parking lot.”

Brandon tipped his head at John. “You good with that?”

“Yep. We need to get as much done as possible, and putting a tracking device on Seffner’s van is going to give us the clues we couldn’t get otherwise. My guess is that the inside of his van might hold evidence too.”

Renz let out a few choice curse words. “You know damn well he’s going to clean out that van the second he gets home.”

“Right, but once that tracking device is attached to his vehicle, the guy will lead us to everything we need to make arrests, whether his van has been cleaned or not. Forensics will find trace evidence that he can’t even see.”

Once they passed through the gate and crossed the parking lot, Renz waved them on. “Go get what you need, fellas. I’ll be fine here while I wait to be picked up. In the meantime, I’ll give Taft an earful.”

Renz watched as the Tahoe disappeared down the road. It would likely be a few hours before they returned, but once they did, there was a chance they could find Jade before nightfall.
