22 November. We had frost again during the night, and during the early morning it starts to drizzle. This rain softens the ground once more and we are soon up to our ankles in mud. Ahead, along the MBL, heavy fighting is under way, but after an hour we are told that the enemy has been forced to fall back to the south. The commander of the 2nd Company has fallen, along with several of the men from his Schwadronstrupp. But the successes are played up—the static AAG platoon of the division which inflicted more than fifty casualties among the enemy using their weapon in the ground-support role, and our capture of some T-34s and destruction of sixteen ATGs and a number of field guns.

We’re still in the assembly area awaiting orders to engage the enemy. It’s been rather quiet during the night, and with Willi Krause, my number two, I’ve cleaned up our foxhole of clay and mud and covered the base with steppe grass and a couple of planks from an ammunition box. This lifts our spirits, and we now try to get some sleep, standing up in the roughly two metre deep hole.
