Chapter 7 By Paul McGuire
The E vangelical C hurch, A postasy, Change Agents, and the D estiny of America in the Last Days
The last days began with the apostles after Jesus Christ ascended into heaven and the church was born. Well-meaning Christians have believed for two thousand years that Jesus Christ was returning in their lifetime. Although no one can claim to know for certain the time of the Lord’s return, I believe that we are now entering the final phase of the last days. The church is literally pressing its nose against the window of the Tribulation period, and we are seeing an unprecedented acceleration of what Jesus Christ called the “signs of the time.” One critical sign of the last days was what the apostle Paul called the “great apostasy,” or a great falling away from the essential doctrines of the faith. Nowhere is this more apparent than in what could be called the “evangelical church,” which, to varying degrees, had at one time claimed to be the “Bible-believing church”—the church that was birthed during the Reformation and which emphasized a return to Scripture as man’s final authority in all matters both theological and practical. The early revivals in America such as the Third Great Awakening led by Jonathan Edwards, George Whitefield, and others were extensions of this Reformation, which emphasized a return to the Bible.
Fifty years ago, American evangelicalism had its roots in the both the First and Second Great Awakenings, and the spiritual father of the Second Great Awakening, the famous attorney Charles Finney, ignited a revival when he wrote the book, Why I Left Freemasonry . The great evangelist D. L. Moody wrote, “I do not see how any Christian, most of all a Christian ministry, can go into these secret lodges.”
Today, while many Christian leaders openly scoff at the existence of the organizations like the Illuminati, our Christian forefathers did scoff, but warned of their dangers. The tragedy is that there are many well-known Christian leaders who fellowship quite comfortably with powerful media celebrities who have direct ties with the New Age movement.
The evangelical church in America is no longer the same evangelical church that it was in the 1950s–1970s when the great evangelist Billy Graham came to prominence, Bill Bright founded Campus Crusade for Christ, Dr. Francis Schaeffer called for doctrinal purity, and the “Jesus Movement” swept across the campuses of America.
Today, the evangelical Christian church in America is a radically different kind of church than it was even thirty years ago. The question is this: Is the current evangelical church still a biblical church, or has it become part of what the apostle Paul called the great apostasy and the lukewarm church of Laodicea that Jesus Christ corrected in the book of Revelation? Over the last four decades, the majority of the evangelical church has rejected its belief in biblical absolutes and sound doctrine and has embraced “the spirit of this age.”
Dr. Francis Schaeffer, the greatest evangelical theologian of the last century,
