Chapter 14

A knock came on the front door. Lily stopped in her tracks, carrying a basket of herbs from her latest harvest. She wasn’t expecting anyone, and Albert was out for a few hours at the Council meeting. Not that he wanted to leave her, but as one of the vampire representatives, he had an obligation. And Lily absolutely hated Council meetings. So, she forced him to go with many promises that she would be perfectly safe. He left with much reluctance and tried to turn back several times before she threatened to hex him if he didn’t get a move on.

While she appreciated his concern, and it really did make her feel safer knowing how seriously he took her wellbeing, it was starting to become a little overbearing. Not to mention, it did nothing to quell her own anxiety. Albert’s ramped-up emotions were taking as much of a toll on her as they were on him.

Another knock on the door drew her to the matter at hand. The only people who visited the house were Brie and Wes, and Brie would be at the shop while Ezra was also at the Council meeting. None of her wards tripped to indicate anything malicious. And if the wards weren’t triggered, it had to be someone she or Albert permitted in the house. She set the basket on the kitchen island and padded to the front door, pulling it open warily.

Standing on the large front porch was the last thing Lily ever expected to see at her house. Gathered in a huddled group were six Everett women, each loaded down with canvas bags and various potted plants—not only her sisters, but her mother, and her two sisters, and even her granny.

Lily didn’t get a word in before they pushed their way inside with a loud jumble of chatter about the things they brought. They were clearly continuing on a conversation that started before Lily opened the door.

“Lily, dear, where can we set these bags? I have mugwort, witch hazel, and some of my mixed berry jam. Do vampires eat jam? Doesn’t matter—everyone loves my mixed berry jam. Perfect headache cure.” Her Auntie Petunia swept past, already heading for the kitchen like she owned the place, her chatter endless as she went.

“Oh, please, Tunie, it’s a hangover cure. We all know that’s why you made it, you damn lush.” Auntie Daisy snorted from behind her sister. Hyacinth kissed her daughter on the cheek as she swept past, barely pausing long enough to do so, leaving Lily wide-eyed and open-mouthed, staring, still holding the door open.

“Here, take this,” Rose gruffly said, thrusting a large wreath made of dill. Lily looked down at the wreath in her hands. It was well crafted; she could clearly see that Rose had taken great care in weaving her magic into it—dill to ward off evil spirits and welcome prosperity into the home. It was thoughtful and kind—so very unlike Rose. Their mom probably made her do it, but Rose was known for her magical arrangements.
