CONTROLLING THE MIND

MARCY

Yesterday Angel and I went over everything Lindsey sent up on the boys’ phones, and then called it a night. Today we were going to start fresh, looking into the good doctor Pfeiffer. Just the thought of him gave me the creeps. What kind of father did experiments on his own kids?

Before, when I’d looked into Pfeiffer, my internet search had brought up his bio, which was basic and barely touched on his life prior to him starting his practice. But there were a number of years where it just glossed over, barely talking about anything but the fact he’d married and started a family, nothing about his work. There were a couple of things that came up that I hadn’t really looked at.

It turned out Pfeiffer had written a number of books and co-written many others. He had about thirty-three credits to his name on the website. I decided to read the reviews and descriptions of the books while Angel was at his physical therapy appointment. He’d taken an Uber, still not able to drive. Of course, I’d offered to take him, but he’d told me to stay and keep working the case.

I pulled up a book called Hallucinogens and the Brain and read over the description. There was another called Therapeutic Derealization and a third called Creating a Fugue State. Those were just the tip of the iceberg, from what it looked like. I clicked on the “look inside” option for Therapeutic Derealization and found the information I’d been looking for. It listed the good doctor as having worked for a pharmaceutical research company called California Medico during the years that were missing from his bio.

I opened another tab and typed in the company name and found that it heavily focused on the effects of various pharmaceuticals on the human brain. Their main focus was on three classes of drugs: sedatives, hallucinogens, and amnestics. I looked those up and found they were often used to create fugue states during which a person is left with no memory of their experiences or actions.

I leaned back in my chair, thinking about everything I’d learned in this case. What I was reading about now was a reflection of what the housekeeper had said. “That mother-humper,” I murmured under my breath. “He was using his boys in his research.”

Glancing at the clock as my stomach growled, I decided to grab lunch from one of the food trucks that tended to set up down the street, then come back and look deeper into some of these books he’d written. I turned my computer monitor off, grabbed my purse, and headed out of the department. The day was nice, mild temperatures and sunny. It felt good to get some fresh air as I made the short walk down the street.

Within minutes I was headed back to the precinct with a lobster roll, some lobster mac and cheese and a large lemonade. It smelled so good my mouth was watering by the time I got to my desk and dug in.
