Chapter 20

Jaal

I should have known this day would come. It was silly of me not to foresee the cowardly darkness striking back. They will regret ever putting my mate at risk.

The mad ones rage outside, sending deafening screams through the air. There are at least thirty tearing the house down at this moment, but I do not wish to trouble Harper with that knowledge. I know what must be done. Harper and I will need to teleport back to my clan... but I am selfish. I have not even barely explored her mind, let alone her body.

Even now, her gloomy glare heats me from the inside out. I shouldn't be turned on by her puckered lips and the lines between her brows, but I am.

"Your food is ready." I stand from my spot beside the fire and place the can beside her feet. "It is hot."

"Got it," she bites back, choosing to focus her glare somewhere behind my broad shoulder. I move to the side, right in front of her stare, and she narrows her eyes.

I can feel her rage rising before she even speaks. "What the fuck is wrong with you? Don't you get it? I want nothing to do with you. I'll never be your mate. Those feelings you have inside don't mean shit to me. All you've given me is more pain."

I cock my head to the side. Her words are meant to stab, to pick at newly healed scabs, but there is something aching inside of her. Something that gives me the impression her words are not true. Not entirely.

"Then I'll take you home. Until then, you're stuck with me."

Her eyes widen a moment before a bang radiates from somewhere above. Harper jumps to her feet, clinging to my arm as all her hate melts away.

I knew it was a facade.

I should not lie to her. I know this to be true. But I can't seem to stop myself from telling her false truths. I just need her to believe in the reality I am weaving until she sees who I really am to her. Once she has fallen, there will be no need for the painful lies. She will hate me, but I can only hope her love outweighs hatred.

"They won't be able to get inside. I promise you that."

Harper nods her head, but worry still lines her face, and her grip on my arm tightens. I don't complain, her soft hands feel like Heaven on my skin. Moments pass and the loud noises quieten, but she does not release her hold on me.

"You should eat." I reach down and lace my fingers through hers, and she doesn't even complain. I hide my sly smile as I bend to retrieve her food, and then I guide her over to the fire. "Sit," I say, pulling her down beside me.

My grin falters as I gaze upon her down-turned lips. The fear evident from her pinched features causes a stab of shame to run through me, but I force those emotions to the side.
