ELEVEN

Vampires are fast.

It only seemed like we teleported because all of our senses were heightened and transformed. The process that created a vampire increased strength, sped up reflexes, and switched on regeneration receptors that prolonged our lives. The tradeoff was that those same receptors made us vulnerable to UV radiation. The younger we were, the more dangerous sunlight could be. As we aged we could tolerate longer exposure times—but we were never completely immune.

In the night, as fearsome as werewolves could be, they paled in comparison to the threat posed by a vampire. Byako’s slide-step made it appear as though she teleported from one location to another. Most eyes just weren’t able to process the information fast enough. Her movement was a variation of the continuity illusion.

Like vampires, werewolves had several senses heightened, smell and hearing being the ones most transformed. Their reflexes were considerably augmented, far surpassing any normal human’s. The werewolves standing in front of us thought they were ready.

It was the last thought they had.

Byako closed the distance on Anton first. Before he knew what had happened, one of his arms was missing at the elbow as Byako stood behind him. It should have been his head.

Anton’s screams filled the night as he fell, clasping what remained of his arm.

“Stop wasting time,” I whispered into the night. “You know time is our enemy in here.”

“I know, I know,” Byako’s voice filled the space around me. “Strike to kill or don’t strike at all. You never let me enjoy these confrontations.”

“Somehow that lesson keeps getting lost,” I said, grabbing Faza. “Finish them and meet up with me. If the rest of the pack feels like dying tonight—dispatch them.”

“Fine,” she said as Anton’s head slid off his shoulders, immediately silencing the screaming, and rolled several feet away. “I’ll meet you by the entrance.”

Reginald looked around in fear as I started walking away, keeping him in sight.

“Where are you?” he screamed. “Face me, you bitch!”

A sword exploded from his chest as Byako appeared behind him.

“I think you have me confused with someone else,” she whispered into his ear. “Call your pack off, or I end them the same way.”

Reginald grunted with pain as blood escaped his lips.

“Stand down,” he said, falling to his knees. “I said, stand down!”

I sensed the energy signatures spread out and move away. They would stand down tonight, but they wouldn’t forget and they would never forgive. More enemies gained.

I reached the wall at the edge of the Park, without incident. Byako appeared behind me, seconds later.

“Did you kill him?” I asked, knowing the answer.

“He stood down,” Byako said with finality. “I let him keep his head. I don’t recommend a stroll through the Park anytime soon, though.”

“Yet, you accuse me of being too nice?”

“The enemy you spare today,” she said, sheathing her blades, “can be the enemy you kill tomorrow.”

“Profound and twisted as usual,” I said, shaking my head slightly. “Take Faza. I need to call Cecil.”

She took Faza from my arms and hefted her across her shoulders like a sack of rice.
