Inside his room, I put the Crown Royal on the dresser, gently tossed my phone onto a pillow, and climbed into Block’s bed. My hands were still shaking and I hoped stretching out would help alleviate it. I wanted to leave, but I saw the wisdom of sticking around until the coast was clear.

Before I could stew on our fight, my phone rang with Victoria’s name displayed. “Hey,” I said.

“Hey, yourself. Are you okay? Gamble said there was a drive-by. Tell me that’s an exaggeration.”

“No,” I whispered.

“But you were inside, right?”

“No. Block and I were by his bike arguing.”

“What?” she yelled.

“Yeah. I thought it was firecrackers, which makes me feel super stupid.”

“Honey, do not feel stupid for not knowing a drive-by when it happens. But you’re okay, right?”

“Peachy, except the man who says he cares about me said he’d cut me loose if it weren’t for us going to meet my mother.”

Over the silence, I heard Victoria breathing. “Only that’s your way of trying to cut him loose.”

“Well, at least I wasn’t going to do it out of anger, for goodness sake.”

“I don’t know what was said, Heidi, but I’m sure there’s more to it. Not that it makes up for anything, but Gamble says things in the heat of the moment. I suspect a lot of those guys are the same way, too.”

I chuckled. “Oh, he said things all right.”

“Tell me all of it.”

Vickie kept quiet after I told her everything that had happened with Riley and after the shooting. The only part I left out was the ‘how many kids and when I’d want to have them’ bit. Even I found that to be over the top from Block.

Finally, she said, “I have a feeling he was about to say something important to you before the gunfire started, honey.”

I rolled my eyes and shook my head. “You are such a romantic, Vickie. You’re worse than Uncle Mick.”

“I wish you’d share with him. And that’s the problem, right there. He knows you’ve got your guard up. If there’s anyone who won’t judge you, it’s him.”

I felt my brows furrow. “How would you know? He made you breakfast like one time.”

“Yeah, but since meeting Gamble I’ve watched those men. All of them, Heidi. There’s nothing they wouldn’t do for each other.”

“Yeah, well, that’s men for you.”

“No, Heidi. That’s the Riot for you. They’re family. The best kind of family because they live and let live. Why do you think Dad wants to join them?”

I giggled thinking about how vexing that had been for Vickie. “Good thing he wasn’t here today. He’d yank you out of Gamble’s house!”

“He’d fail, Heidi. I’m so in love, it makes me sick. And that is saying something.”

“The hell it is. You learned about being in love from Uncle Mick. He’s the biggest romantic this side of the Mississippi.”

“I don’t know, that’s stiff competition since Nora Roberts lives on this side of the river too, you know.”

We lapsed into a quiet moment.

“I’m going to say something—”

“Don’t. You’ve said it before, Vickie.
