CHAPTER SIX

Four days later

– RIVER –

“You’re sure about this?” Her face is pinched with worry and her bottom lip wobbles a bit. “Maybe we shouldn’t. This could cost you your job. Heck, it might even cost you your life if you end up in jail. You’ve been so kind to me and–” She swallows the rest of the words.

Over the past few days, we’ve fallen into a routine of sleeping in the same bed, waking up tangled in each other’s embrace, and sharing breakfast before going to work. Each and every day has been brighter than the next. I knew we’d be good together, and this is just the start.

I reach out and lean in to brush my lips against hers in a featherlight kiss. “I’m sure, and we should. If only to give you peace of mind.”

Each kiss I gave her has been initiated by me but for the first time she grabs my face with both hands and lets our mouths collide. I don’t know if the fierceness inside her spikes due to the adrenaline flowing through her for what we’re about to do, but I’m not complaining one single bit.

She pulls back and I like the way her cheeks are flushed.

Placing a soft kiss on her forehead, I tell her, “Let’s get this over with so we can order pizza and watch a movie. But just remember, I’m picking the movie this time.”

The corner of her mouth twitches and she pats my chest. “Keep dreaming. You picked last time, it’s my turn to pick the movie and pizza toppings.”

“Great,” I mutter in fake annoyance. “Pineapple on my pizza and some sappy romance movie to go along with it.”

“I do not pick sappy romance movies,” she gasps. “It’s either horror or zombies tonight.”

“No denying the pineapple, huh?” I wince.

She shoots me a glare and I blow her a kiss. The twinkle in her eyes is enough to tell me she’s relaxed and not stressed; exactly what she should be. I grab the bag with our supplies and we walk out the door.

Opening the trunk, I throw the bag onto the tarp I’ve already covered the trunk with. Preparation is half the work and I don’t want anything linking us to Alexander’s kidnapping. The ride to the store is quiet and when I park out back, I’m glad to say it’s already dark and the parking lot is completely empty.

There aren’t any cameras and where it was unfortunate with the disappearance of her father, it now works in our favor. We pull down our ski masks and I make sure the chloroform cloth is ready to use.

Both dressed in black, we slide through the night and I have to say, there’s something sexy in watching the woman skillfully open a tiny window and climbing through it without any effort. I follow her through and it takes a while to adjust to the complete darkness of the basement compared to the soft moonlight outside.

Irvine grabs my hand and pulls me with her.
