Chapter Eighteen

The Afternoon of the Blizzard

MEGAN NUDGED the doors open with her shoulder and steered Kasen toward a chair in the back by the sink. “Please, before you fall down, have a seat.”

Too tired to argue, she slumped down, pressing fingers to her eyes to hold back the tears that threatened to pour over the barriers. Who was she kidding? She shook her head and almost snickered at her stupidity. She trusted without question and loved without looking back. Her whole life with Taylor was just challenged.

“Kasen. Kasen, look at me.” Megan coaxed her with a gentle finger beneath her chin.

Anger welled up inside Kasen, hating the fear she felt as she stared at the clasped hands in her lap. Worse than her anger, she found herself afraid that at any moment something would happen to destroy the tiny sliver of connection she’d developed with Megan. Something she desperately wanted and needed.

“Kasen. Please, look at me.”

And she did. She looked up into those welcoming, soft, caring eyes that had the power to push her over the edge. Her chin began to quiver, but she maintained eye contact.

Gentle fingers cupped her chin, and Megan asked, “I need to know if there’s anything I should be worried about?”

“I d-don’t k-know…” She shook her head and squeezed her eyes shut. Her headache was getting worse.

Megan nodded, clearly frustrated. “I need you to tell me what’s going on. I have over sixty guests and staff that I’m responsible for.” Megan didn’t raise her voice, but her worry was evident.

“She…” Kasen bit down a sob. “I…I’m so…so sorry. I…I h-had no…no idea any of th-this would follow me h-here. Not l-like this.”

Megan leaned against the counter and looked at Kasen with a clearly troubled expression. As if sensing her discomfort, she offered an encouraging smile. “How ’bout you start from the beginning.”

Kasen took a slow, deep breath, and rubbed at her temples. The stress was taking its toll, and she felt like she had nothing left to lose. Clearing her throat, she relayed in detail the conversation and how she thought it might be associated with Taylor and the bank. She left out what she had found in the safe deposit box. Although she had her suspicions, she still wasn’t sure what everything meant.

Megan seemed taken aback as amber eyes studied Kasen, her face intent. “Are you sure?”

Trembling, emotionally raw, she realized this nightmare would never be over. “I’m s-sorry. I can’t be…be certain. She…she n-never c-came out a-and said it, but…but sh-she k-knows th-tings.” Her eyes filled. “H-how can she k-know?”

A phone rang, and Megan held up a finger as she reached into her jacket pocket and pulled out her cell. “Shit. Hold on a second,” she said as she stepped away. “Hey! Where are you?” Pause. “We have a situation here that I need your assistance with.” Pause. “I’ll tell you when you get here. Meet me in the kitchen.”

Megan slid her phone back into her pocket and stepped back over to Kasen.
