“Stand up straighter.” My father’s voice had me nearly rolling my eyes, but when a hard hit came to my back, I straightened, trying to not wince. One day. One day I would be stronger than him so he couldn’t push me around. It never got bad, but I had a feeling that it did with my mom. Not that she would ever admit to it, but I heard her tears sometimes at night.

One day I was going to be able to step in and help her.

“Jagger and Gage are here,” my mom said with a calm tone. “Go on and talk to them, honey. It’s important to make friends.”

She didn’t have to tell me twice. I had known my friends for what felt like forever, despite only being eight. When I reached them though, I noticed they were both huddled around a smaller figure. Now, I was fairly large for my age, and while both Jagger and Gage were a year younger than myself, we all tended to be around the same size.

Which is why the contrast of the small figure they were talking to was so shocking.

“Jagger, Gage,” I said, trying to draw their attention. They turned to look at me and revealed the smallest little fairy-like girl I’d ever come across. My family didn’t come to events often, but I had never seen this girl, and I would have remembered her—she looked like an angel.

Her golden hair was almost down to her waist, and she was wearing a gold sparkly dress that floated around her. She seemed about two years younger than me, and when she looked directly at me, gold eyes meeting my own, it was like a straight shot to my chest, making it squeeze uncomfortably.

“Hi.” Her voice was soft and upbeat.

“Hi,” I answered as she stepped forward and put out her hand.

“I’m Bexley, but you can call me Bex,” she announced as I met her hand.

Bex. Somehow I knew I would never forget that name.
