THE EVIL GENIUS OF THE NEWS FEED

The News Feed is so powerful and so familiar these days that it’s difficult to imagine a world without it. As the infamous origin story goes, Face-book was launched as a Harvard-only networking site in 2004, and slowly branched out to other colleges and universities before eventually becoming available to everyone. Even in its early days, Facebook was an agile platform that evolved quickly. Your personal profile page changed and became more refined through time, as Facebook adopted a barrage of new features: first, the ability to blog; next, to add photos; and then, to tag friends. Face-book’s user growth was healthy, accruing its one millionth user before the end of 2004, less than a year after its initial rollout to Harvard students. Only two years later, Facebook was estimated to be worth over $1 billion.

Despite this rapid evolution, the structure of the site itself was still much simpler than it is now, consisting only of personal pages—your Wall. This made for a very different user experience. The social element was protracted. You could “friend” (and “unfriend”) at will, but if you wanted to see what a friend was up to, you had to actually visit their individual page and scroll their feed, like a barbarian. Life before the News Feed in Face-bookville, population 10 million, was simple: a poke here, a poke there. If you were really lucky, someone would write on your Wall.
