CHAPTER THIRTY-FIVE

Tuesday 8:45 a.m.

Damien filled Joe in on the information regarding how the family set up the home and what Detective Travis had told him as he drove to Maggie Newsome’s home.

“Why did that lady give us Nancy’s name if it doesn’t show she was at the home?”

“I don’t know. But we will interview her and find out.”

“Do you think any of the Chandler kids have anything to do with this?” Joe asked.

“Anything is possible. But it doesn’t feel like that. From what I gathered, each child is a millionaire in their own right. If the property is no longer used as a state-run home for kids, then the children will sell the property and split the proceeds.”

“I can’t see why one of them would want to murder Humphry. The kids have been long gone from the home for almost two decades. Unless a greedy grandchild is looking to take over the Chandler empire.”

Damien laughed. “I bet that’s exactly what it is.” Driving onto the street, he took notice of the neighborhood. Not the worst part of town, not the greatest.

“Have you heard back from Humphry’s lawyer?”

“I got an email from his secretary. She has been instructed to answer any questions. He said he got called out on a deposition. He mentioned his partner could help with anything. I sent her a list of questions. I figure that’s the easiest way to get answers. To tell the truth, I don’t see a connection to Chase’s death and anything having to do with his company. After I get the answers, if I think I need to speak with the lawyer, I’ll call him.”

Damien parked between two police cars. Yellow crime scene tape surrounded Maggie’s stoop and the entryway to her building. He grabbed his ID and clipped it onto his belt after showing it to the officers guarding the front doors.

“I’m not seeing anything implicating anyone from the company either.” Joe almost bumped into Damien when he stopped mid-stride.

Damien pointed to the security camera in the corner. “You think that works?”

“Not a chance,” Joe said.

“Our victim is on the third floor. Let’s take the stairs.” Damien pushed the door open.

Entering the dimly lit stairwell, Joe put his hands in his pockets. “This building is on the cuff of being a crappy place to live. Better than some, but I sure as hell don’t trust this railing.”

Damien stepped into the third-floor hallway. “It’s nicer than most I’ve seen in this area, especially a few blocks over.” Walking up to Maggie Newsome’s door, a little old lady stood down the hallway clutching a small dog. Damien nodded to Officer Talon, who stood like a century outside the victim’s door. “Why is she standing there?”

“She insists on speaking with the detective in charge. She won’t go back into her apartment until then.” Officer smirked at Damien. “She hasn’t budged either.”

Damien sighed. “You know her name?”

“Mrs. June Cromwell.”

Damien looked at Joe. “Hang on.” He walked to the elderly lady. “Mrs. Cromwell?”

“Are you in charge?”

“Yes, Ma’am, I am.
