How it works…
With the creation of the bark material, we saw an interesting way of mapping a texture that allowed us to use generated coordinates instead of UVs. This method creates a virtual box around the object that will apply the textures on the six faces of the box. It will then project the image on the surface of the object depending on the normals. We can use this technique when we have to apply irregular textures on organic objects seamlessly. The blend value determines how much the seams of the texture will be blurred. With the creation of the leaves, we saw several new interesting techniques. We saw how to use textures to determine the transparency of a surface. We mixed our material with Transparent BSDF using a black and white map to determine where we wanted opaque and transparent areas. As with every other situation in cycles, gray parts of the map will give intermediate values of the Shader Mix node, with black being 0 and white 1. We also used the Lightpath node to change the color and intensity of the shadows of the leaves. Because we are using an Alpha map, we had to multiply Is Shadow Ray with the Alpha map, since the Light Path node takes information from the geometry of the object, also taking into account transparent parts. We also saw how to apply different materials to the two sides of a plane. This was extremely useful here as leaves have a very different appearance on either side.
