NOAH

BEAUTIFUL JEANINE STANDS at her apartment door when I climb the steps. Her arms crossed over her chest, she hides herself as her gaze fixes on everywhere but on me. She’s in a pair of gray sweatpants that hugs her thick thighs, and a loose t-shirt, but her arms are over her tits and I can’t have a look at them.

I swallow. She’s in her pajamas, and I’ve never seen her dressed like this. Always in her sober jeans and dark shirt when she arrives, I love seeing her in something more comfortable.

Like she’s giving me a view of her true self.

I stop in front of her, my heart beating so loud she definitely can hear it. She gapes up at me, her gray eyes almost black in the dim light of the corridor. Crap, she’s gorgeous.

“Hey, you.” Her smile curves, making my body tense. Her beauty is so exhilarating it hurts.

“Hey...” I drag the word, then clear my throat to sound centered, even when my heart thunders. My arm moves and I offer her the bouquet. “These are for you.”

Jeanine’s eyes shift and light up. The gray comes out, glittering, and I don’t think I’ve ever seen her like this. She smiles when she takes the bouquet, and my heart skitters ahead of me, threatening to jump out of my chest.

This bouquet was hard to choose. The girl at the flower shop said it was not typical, but I swear I heard Jeanine mentioning she loves sunflowers, so that’s what I got her.

From the grin she’s giving me, I think I got it right.

“They’re beautiful,” Jeanine breathes as she inhales the flowers. Her eyelashes flutter when she meets my eyes, her gray orbs sparkling like precious jewels. She hugs the bouquet closer to her chest and steps back into her apartment. “Why don’t you come in?”

Hesitation pools in my stomach for a second. To spend time with her, alone, seems so much more than I’ve ever hoped for. And yet... Isn’t it why I’ve come here? Isn’t this the reason I have used my break to buy these flowers, and the reason I’ve accepted coming even with those jerks tagging me?

I need to tell her. This feeling inside me only grows. Either she’ll send me off, gently putting me down so our professional relationship won’t suffer, or she’ll make me the happiest man alive.

With my heart beating in my throat, I cross the threshold.

Jeanine closes the door behind us and I watch her skippering farther into her place. “Just a second,” she says before she disappears into one of the rooms.

I take that time to study the place. The TV is on, though I don’t recognize what she’s watching. A fluffy sheet drapes from the couch to the floor, telling me of the last place she sat before we arrived. Her phone is forgotten over it, and I wonder if the cushions are still warm from her body heat.

The decoration is sober. Mostly neutral if not for the splash of color of sunflowers here and there.
