Reading between the lines of his letters home to his family — there was no doubt in Sophie’s mind that Kieran was in severe danger and battled constant attacks against the Taliban militants. But something deep inside her told her he would come back safely.

After that incident Sophie lost contact; the military had tightened its security, and she could not do a thing but wait. That was the hardest part for anyone.

Simon, however, at this time was suffering another setback. Unbeknown to her, Simon had started drinking again, and one day things took a turn for the worse. Simon was missing and was now AWOL (Absent Without Leave) which was a severe offence. Simon was now a deserter — this was serious!

Sophie had been approached by the MP’s (Military Police) concerned over his whereabouts and state of health. Sophie decided to trace him herself and tried to convince the military it was best for Simon if she could talk him into returning to his Squadron CO before the military police found him and arrested him.

With the support of the military, she’d found out that he’d gone back home to Corby Glen. To help Simon, she would have to return home immediately; there was no alternative route. Her family at least deserved to know the truth about her relationship with Weapons System Officer Simon Campbell.
