CHAPTER EIGHT
CARTER
âWhat the fuck do you mean, he bailed?â I demand as I throw the door open to my fatherâs office, only to find Ricardo watching me through hooded eyes. His head is tilted, a heavily tattooed hand resting over his mouth I donât miss the contempt in his black eyes.
âHe⦠I didnâtâ¦â the line crackles. I canât hear the son of a bitch which infuriates me more. I donât have time for this bullshit so instead of trying to hear what this fucker is trying to tell me I hit my phone against my head a couple of times, my pent-up frustration getting the better of me. âI canât hear you, you dumb fuck. Call me when youâve got the answers I need,â I slam the phone down on the desk.
âProblem?â Ricardo asks as I throw my body down into my fatherâs leather chair.
âYeah. You could call it that.â Iâm twitchy. Iâm on edge and I need a little something to focus my mind. Reaching down into the bottom drawer of my old manâs desk I pull out his vintage bourbon and Ricardo watches me cautiously. Everyone knows my old man only brings this out when itâs a cause for celebration, but right in this moment I donât give a damn. Itâs not like heâll miss it and even if he does, heâll be able to buy a shit ton to replace it with without even noticing a dent in bank account. Plus, Iâd like to think Iâve earned it putting up with this motherfucker opposite me.
âWanna talk about it?â He asks. I donât look at him while I pour myself a healthy shot, but I can feel him smirking at meâlike Iâm the fucking joke.
âWhatâs there to talk about?â I watch him closely and his empty eyes never leave mine. Not even when I bring the glass to my lips and down the amber liquid. It burns my throat, but I welcome the pain before scrunching up my eyes.
âYou could start by telling me whatâs eating you, kid.â I like what heâs trying to do here. Does he really think Iâm naive enough to fucking fall for his bullshit? This guy can sit back and pretend he cares all he likes but we all know that heâs only out for himself. With my old man out of town he actually thinks he doesnât have to answer to me. Why⦠because he thinks Iâm beneath him? This motherfucker doesnât think Iâm worthy of being hereâmy familyâs legacy. Fucking mine. Not his. âA problem shared and all thatâ¦â he offers, and I curve my lips at him. What a fucking guy.
I search his face, but heâs good. Heâs been trained well by my old man not to give anything away. But no matter. I donât need Ricardo to admit the error of his ways. I already know them. Every fucking one. I thought about filling my old man in, but then I decided against it. After all Iâm gonna come
