It’s been three days and three sleepless nights since my totally non-badass rescue from the roof.

The embarrassment is slowly subsiding, and I was brave enough to tell my best friend about it. She literally rolled around on the floor laughing. Which made me laugh, so yeah, I’m starting to see the funny side. But only just.

What I’m not feeling better about is the fact that I can’t get Blake out of my head.

I spend the whole day thinking about him and all night tossing and turning, my body hot and aching remembering the feel of him pressed against me.

I lean back on my pillow and cast my book aside. I can’t even concentrate enough to read.

I’ve spent the last few days unpacking and getting my apartment how I want it. I love having my own space and being able to sit in bed all evening reading if I want to.

I grew up in a large family with five kids. As the oldest, I was expected to help out. Then a few years ago Dad passed away. Mom mostly works night shifts, so she really needed my help.

While my friends were moving into their own places, I stayed home, helping Mom get the younger kids to school in the mornings and then getting them to bed in the evenings.

A few months ago, my youngest sister turned fourteen. I decided that was it. They’re old enough to look after themselves, and I was itching to get out on my own.

I thought I might miss the busyness of a full household, but the last few nights here have been pure bliss.

I take a sip of hot chocolate and open my book. I’m just getting into a juicy scene where the hero meets the heroine for the first time when a sweet sound reaches my ears.

I put my book down and listen. It’s guitar music, a song from the nineties that I vaguely recognize.

Would you believe me when I tell you,

You are the queen of my heart.

The window’s ajar, propped open by a pile of books so it won’t shut unexpectedly. The music sounds like it’s coming from right outside.

I frown. It sounds like it’s literally outside my window, which is impossible because I’m four floors up. And as I found out, there’s only one way to get up here: a big ass fireman’s ladder.

My heart skips a beat, and I swing my legs over the side of the bed. I race to the window and pull it fully up.

Sitting on the ledge with his feet on the fireman’s ladder is Blake. He’s strumming a guitar and singing softly.

I stare at him, my brain trying to take in what I’m seeing. He looks up from his guitar and a smile creeps onto his lips, but he keeps singing.

Moonlight peeps through the trees, casting his face in shadow. His look of concentration as he strums the notes stirs something inside me.

My insides go all fluttery, and there’s a pull deep in my core. I perch on the edge of the windowsill, my body turned towards him, listening to him sing.
