Chapter Seven

Wendy took the elevator down to level twelve, accompanied by Chris. He saw her go into a trance, then hold out her arms and spread all her fingers. In seconds, long flames shot from her fingertips, setting everything on fire. When Chris was satisfied that everything would burn, he guided her into the elevator to the next level.

Adam, Jake, Tyler, Zenita, and Tutu had already gone up to the waiting vans. This last part of the operation was entirely up to Wendy and Chris.

After she set the lobby on fire, she collapsed. Chris quickly gathered her into his arms and ran out the door with her to the last waiting van. He gently placed Wendy on the floor. “Will she be all right?” he asked Tutu, waiting in the van. He didn’t even notice who else was inside the van with her.

Tutu was immediately at her sister’s side. “She’ll be okay. She’s just exhausted because she’s never had to use this ability to such an extent.” “I guess I’m driving?”

“For now. One of us will have to drive because

you’re fetching your own car. The others have already gone to the motel to retrieve phones and computers.”

When they got there, they were almost done. Tyler walked up to him. “I removed the tracking device from our vehicles.”

“Good. I wish we could drive together,” Chris said.

“Me too. But you’ll have company. There are more captives than we thought, so we’re spreading them out over the four vans and our cars.”

“I gather we’re going with Adam and his sons for now?”

“I guess so. We don’t have a concrete plan yet. Look at that smoke billowing from the mountains. It won’t be long and there’ll be fire trucks and all kind of activity there. We need to leave,” Tyler said.

When Chris got into his SUV, he was glad to see Eagan in the passenger seat and two others that had been in the cell with Eagan and his brother. They were cougar shifters. He could scent them strongly now. If he’d have had to take Hank, or any of his scurvy lot in his car, he wouldn’t have been happy. Not that he could do anything about it, but even though the man had given his word, he didn’t trust him for a second.

“So where are we going, Eagan?”

“Oregon.”

“That’s a helluva drive.” Chris started the SUV and followed the other vehicles. “How well do you know Zenita and her daughters?”

“Well enough, I guess. We haven’t known them overly long. When Silver got his memory back, we helped him get his family and their pack away from the feds. That’s when Zenita came into the picture.”

“Memory? There’s a story there. It’s going to be a long drive, lots of time to fill me in.”

“After I call my wife. Father gave me a disposable phone and I’m anxious to talk to her.”

“It’s the middle of the night.”

“She’ll be awake, waiting for my call,” Eagan said. “Hey, baby, it’s me.”

Chris listened to one side of the conversation and heard the love in Eagan’s tone.
