As promised, Gothec knocked on his door when the sky outside was still a pale gray, and the two slipped out of the palace before anyone, including their servants, had time to seek them out. Walking quickly past the palace sentries, they crossed the courtyard and headed down the cobbled path to the sea. Hand in hand, they walked along the strand until they came to the base of a steep cliff. Here, massive black rocks formed a rounded cove where the waves pulsed gently against the dark sand.

“There are marvelous caves here,” Gothec said, leading Blaik between the rocks. They had to step carefully to avoid slipping on the smooth, wet surfaces. “Lyndor and I discovered them as boys. We used to drive poor Wym mad when we would slip away and go on our own little excursions. He would storm down here and order us home, sure we would slip and drown ourselves. I am not sure how he always found us so quickly. I suppose he used his magic.”

“You and Lyndor had fun when you were children, then? He always seems so serious—rather like my brother Jarquis, in fact.”

“Serious is an accurate description, indeed. Still, he was my only playmate, so we got on well enough. I think our personalities complemented one another. He took no chances, and that was all I ever did.”

Blaik smiled at the vision of Gothec running wild along the beach and clambering on the cliffs like a lizard, while the prince followed at a more cautious pace.

“Here.” Gothec motioned Blaik to an opening between the large black rocks. They slipped inside a unique formation, a sort of fortress designed and built by the mysterious, primeval forces of the tide.

“We used to pretend this was our keep, and we were soldiers defending the shore. Little did we know how difficult it really would have been to guard against invaders. We thought our good intentions alone would secure Lyndor’s throne.”

“Yes, I know about the threat from the north.” Blaik recalled what Conor had told him about their treacherous cousin Solen’s attempt to kill the king and seize Quellaria for himself. Such treason would have earned him death in most kingdoms, but Lyndor was considering his next move. Perhaps the stress was what was causing him so many headaches. “What is Solen doing now, I wonder?”

“Laying low, I hope. One never knows with him,” Gothec said grimly. “I doubt he has abandoned his plans altogether.”

“Why doesn’t the king send an armed guard to seize him and bring him to face justice?”

“Lyndor has considered that, believe me. You underestimate the difficulty of traveling to the north and infiltrating his lair. His men are loyal to him and would give their lives to defend him, even from the king. Don’t forget that he dabbles in sorcery as well. As long as he stays away, I think my cousin prefers to ignore him.”

“I hope such a strategy is sound in this case. I fear not only for the kingdom, but for Conor and my unborn nephew.
