Chapter 30 ​

Ash stopped once at an all-night service centre for coffee. It had been a long day and night and it wasn't over yet. At last, after midnight, he stopped the truck outside their quarters in the park. She slid out of the seat, stretching her back. The vehicle sure wasn't the most comfortable in the world. Ash must have felt the same, raising his arms and twisting.

He winced.

Oh, Lord. He'd been shot and she'd forgotten.

"How's your arm?"

"It aches a little."

"That will be the first thing, then."

She shooed him into the clinic and checked the bullet wound again. It didn't look unusually red or swollen but she injected a dose of antibiotics to prevent any anaerobic infections.

"Do you want a pain killer?"

He shook his head. "I want to shower and brush my teeth."

"Okay. I could use a shower, too." Her hair felt gritty and her face ached where the airbag had hit. She'd have a few scratches and bruises to show for her heroics.

He was ready before she was, wearing his usual jeans and an unbuttoned shirt, his feet bare. He looked her over, apparently pleased with what he saw. She'd put on the simple cotton dress she'd brought for hot summer nights at home, cool and casual. She liked what she saw, too, the man she loved. He handed her a glass of wine and gestured for her to sit opposite him. She sipped. Nice.

He held his glass in both hands. "You know what I am. Does it alarm you?"

Tigers weren't nice. She remembered the torn throat of the beaten male, the cub's severed head. But he was more than just a tiger. "Can you change now? Right here in front of me?"

"I can."

"Well, do it."

"Now?"

She put the glass down. "Now."

"I'll have to take my clothes off."

"I've seen you naked before."

He gave a barely perceptible shrug. He peeled off the shirt, easing it over his damaged arm. Then he unbuckled his belt and turned around.

"No. I want to see your face."

"If you say so."

He turned around and stepped out of his pants. He was half hard, his cock jutting away from his body. Sally tore her eyes away, up the lean, muscled torso to his face.

"You have that effect on me," he said.

She could have sworn he was embarrassed.

And then his form blurred, hazy in swirling dark mist. His outline changed, dropped, thickened, all in a few heartbeats. Sally's head spun. Where he'd been standing a huge black cat lowered itself to its haunches, its amber eyes intent, fixed on her face. The top of its massive head almost reached her shoulder. Teeth glinted in slightly open jaws. No stripes but unmistakably a tiger, a full grown male with the wide face and the bearded jowls. All she needed was a jungle path and she would have been in her dream.

For a moment she forgot to breathe until the pressure on her lungs forced the issue. She should be afraid, terrified. But this same beast had spared her not a few hours ago.
