Artists, says Scollop, need careful handling. Treat ’em like your mother’s best china. But that doesn’t mean they should be locked up in a cupboard. Scollop tells me this as he slurps his oxtail soup. An artist needs encouragement, direction, worldly guidance. No one was too big or too small to fit under Scollop’s umbrella. He shielded his artists from sharks and vultures, the soul-sucking lackeys lingering backstage. He steered them away from the fleshpots of Croydon and Kilburn. Many a fine talent has been led astray by a pair of jouncy buttocks or a smooth-tongued Reverend.

Remember Vitus Fosdyke? Back in ’63 the world was on a platter for him. The greatest seesaw tumbler this side of Gdansk. Scollop received enquiries from Marshall Tito. The New Acropolis in Doncaster is where it all went wrong for Vitus. An old story. He fell for a lass from Hull, Luisa Simmonds. A mermaid, bottom of the bill – not an authentic mermaid. Glorified striptease, really, with a naughty nautical theme, scanties and shanties or some such smut. Scollop claims to have forgotten her stage name: something vulgar no doubt, she was on Monty Torville’s roster, a rum outfit, semi-criminal. So Vitus jacked in the seesaw, just as he was about to make it big. The Royal Variety people had been after him for months, not to mention the Yugoslavs. But Vitus packed a suitcase and left with his ersatz mermaid for Hull or Hamburg, Scollop doesn’t know. Tito was furious, of course. There was almost a diplomatic incident but Scollop smoothed things over by offering the Marshall the services of Miranda Fanshawe, a versatile ballerina who interpreted famous scenes from the Bible. A little later Tito gave up on live entertainment and took to watching a film every night with his wife.
