MEDEA: Where would I go?

JASON: I don’t care.

MEDEA: For how long?

JASON: Go back to your family.

MEDEA: And tell them you didn’t want me…

Silence.

Jason.

JASON: Tell ’em they were right. Tell ’em you’re sorry. Tell them you’ll marry that other bloke.

MEDEA: I chose you.

JASON: Go back where you belong.

MEDEA: Where? Where do I belong? I gave up belonging somewhere.

JASON: I didn’t ask you to.

MEDEA: But I did.

JASON: I can survive without you.

MEDEA: All the dances and songs my granny taught me, that was my dowry. I bought your love, Jason.

JASON: I didn’t ask you?

MEDEA: All the stories you used to impress your friends.

JASON: You signed your name. You wanted it.

MEDEA: I wanted you.

JASON: You wanted to get out of there.

MEDEA: I wanted you.

JASON: I never asked you to… [give up anything]

MEDEA: No, you asked me to betray—

JASON: [overlapping] That’s enough!

MEDEA: You asked me to betray everything.

JASON: [overlapping] Stop!

MEDEA: As they turned up the bones of my ancestors.

You saw how angry my father was… you heard the wailing of my aunties…

JASON: No… I couldn’t hear over the sound of the bulldozers.

I never asked you [to do anything against your will]—

MEDEA: You didn’t have to ask. I did it freely, ’cause I love you.

JASON: It’s over.

MEDEA: No! I refuse.

JASON: You can’t stay with me…

MEDEA: With you…

JASON: You used me. You’re always wanting more, you’re never happy, never happy with what you got. Now I got nothing more to give you… Go back, crawl back and beg forgiveness.

MEDEA: I’ve sacrificed for you.

JASON: And what’ve you got to show for it?

MEDEA: A home, a husband, a son.

JASON: You still have a son.

MEDEA: Where will I go, Jason?

JASON: No more.

MEDEA: When I go down the street people stare at me. Whitefellas, blackfellas. They know I’m from somewhere they’ve never been… and they’re scared. I remind them of what they don’t have. They walk around like they’re scared to put a foot wrong, apologising with every step—too scared to admit it, admit they don’t belong here. I’ve known the spirits to come up through my feet and take my body when I’m dancing. That’s who you fell in love with.

MEDEA lets sand run through her fingers.

Silence.

Let’s go back to the mine and face it together. Pack up, just us. How it used to be. The money was good, you loved me. We just forget about this… we don’t have to talk about it, we can forget about it, we can forget the whole thing…

Who is it? I want to know. Is she pretty? Say something!

What’s she got that I haven’t? We promised each other—

JASON: Stop the bullshit!

MEDEA: I promised to the spirits.

JASON: It’s over.

MEDEA: They’ll come for you—

JASON: There are no spirits. You’re talking to your fucking self.

MEDEA: You’re wrong.

JASON: You’re going mad.

MEDEA: We can go to the ocean again—

JASON: Shut up!

MEDEA: You can get a job—

JASON reacts violently and throws MEDEA to the ground.

JASON: Are the spirits talking to you now? Can you hear them? Are they telling you anything? What are they saying?
