Rosa stayed one night at my house. We had sex, and it was fine.

“Are you in love with Valerie?” I asked later.

“Yes. I hope it lasts. I want it to. I’m in love with you too.”

I laughed. “Just the two of us.”

“She understands. Or says she does.”

I figured Rosa was bullshitting me. I doubted she and Valerie had conversations about how she was in love with both of us, but it was sweet of her to say.

The next morning, I drove her up to the closest Waffle House. I couldn’t convince her to try the grits, even when I ordered a bowl and put the spoon up to her mouth. Maybe next time. We ate our omelets and hash browns and laughed about Richard’s idea of putting us on a TV show.

“The final scene of the pilot is us at the Waffle House,” I said.

Rosa looked around. “I think it should be the final shot of every episode.”

“Or the beginning,” I said, thinking.

We debated this and never reached a conclusion.

Rosa had another serious discussion with me before she left. “Find something to keep busy,” she said before she drove away. “Start working out again. Do something.”

I nodded. I’d already made up my mind to go to the park every day. I hadn’t climbed the mountain once since I’d moved to Georgia. In addition to hanging out at the park and redecorating, I’d figure out something.
