Chapter 12

Fifty-seven fucking years. Two murders with open confessions had gotten me sentenced until I would be more than ready to die. I wouldn’t even know the world when I finally got out, if I would even survive in here that long. It was a shock to the system seeing the twelve-foot barbed-wire fences as I was brought out of the van by a prison guard. I gazed around me as I was escorted into the building, saying goodbye to life outside for the rest of my prime years and more. The prison was intimidating and dull, but at least the sheriff kept to his word and recommended me into a minimum-security prison, which the judge allowed so I could “be close to family,” not that I had any blood relatives.

Once we got inside, I was handed over to the next officer, who seemed friendly enough, but professional. He was tall, dark, and handsome. Way too good to spend his life taking the law up the ass. He removed my cuffs once I was in processing and asked me to hand him the envelope I was given when I left the local county, which I did. “Miss Fallon. Your date of birth is October 13, 1989, is that correct?” he asked. I nodded to verify. In this day and age. Surely, we were past the rudeness of stating one’s age. “This envelope contains all your belongings upon entering Hills Dale Women’s Correctional Facility. One gold watch. One—”

“I went through this in the jail. I do not need you to repeat it. I don’t care if anything isn’t there or goes missing, so can we skip this?” I asked.

“One gold watch. One pair of gold, diamond stud earrings. One gold chain necklace. Three gold bracelets. One gold hair clip. One phone, and one wallet with no cash money.” He ignored me.

“Got it,” I said as I rolled my eyes.

We sat in silence as he finished whatever paperwork he was filling out. Processing took much longer here than jail, but apparently, I had absolutely nothing but time now. Eventually, he scribbled at the bottom of the page and turned it to face me. I had to sign saying I agreed to what happened. I quickly scribbled my name at the bottom, not giving a shit. By the time I got out of here, I would be too old, and the jewelry would be outdated. The officer stood up and asked me to follow him down the hall, where we stopped at a room labeled “search room.” I assumed they would be inspecting my cavities, but I was in for a surprise. Two female officers were in there waiting, looking cranky as hell but far from intimidating.

“Take off all your clothes, please, and hand them to CO Turner,” one said.

“At least buy me dinner first, geez,” I said sarcastically.

“Clothes. Now.”

“Fine, fine. Don’t get your panties in a twist, love.” I rolled my eyes.

“It’s CO Brunker to you, inmate.”

As instructed, I took off all my clothing until I was completely naked in front of these strangers.
