The french doors from the cottage living room stood open on the terrace. The screen door was closed and hooked on the inside. I walked around on the ocean side and at once heard voices. I flattened myself against the house and moved as close as possible to the open casements.
They were in the bedroom. I couldnât at first place them, but soon decided that they were in the big low modern chair. Clarinda, I assumed, was sitting on her Kennethâs lap. This didnât require the mind of a detective because in her place and if he were Patrick I would have been there myself.
Both were smoking, as was evident from the smell of the Turkish tobacco, and little lapses in their talk which would indicate drawing on a cigarette. Of course, it could have been love-making that made the lapses, but there was tobacco smoke, too.
âIâve told you a thousand times, darling,â West said, and his voice was as always laced with mockery and a deep secret knowledge, âthat if your precious Ron knew what I know he wouldnât touch you at any price. Ron, my darling, is an idealist.â
âDarling!â They apparently kissed, and she said, her sexy voice very low, âYou wonât tell him, darling?â
âYou know damn well I wonât.â West laughed. âI havenât any principles, my sweet, but I donât run around telling little boys thereâs no Santa Claus. Thatâs for you to do.â
âI want him, darling. So I canât tell him.â
âWell,â West said, âIâve always told you, Clare, that what you want is what I want.â
âBut donât you understand, Ken? A little whileâa year or twoâand then itâs mine, maybe. Ours, darling. I canât live without money.â
âI wouldnât count too much on its working out according to plan.â
She said softly, âDo you mind very much? Will you be unhappy?â
âMy darling girl, I shall remain just as I am. I was a stand-in for your first husband, so why not for your second? Iâve hit bottom long since and come back up as high, probably, as Iâll ever get. Nobody could be as unhappy as youâve made me, but it wouldnât be honest not to say also that youâve made me blissfully happy more times than I can count, too.â He chuckled. âFor a long time I went up and down, like a seesaw. Then things got in their right place. If you had been married to me all these years I would have lost you long before this. You have to have plenty of money. I am woefully incapable of providing as much as you demand.â
âDarling, Iâll get us money.â
âIâm not a pimp, Clare.â He laughed. âNot quite that low, at least.â
She evidently kissed him again and said, âWhoever said you were! But to be poor is so horrible.â
âFor you. Not for me.â
There was a long kiss. She said, âI shall never give you up. Whatever else, youâve got to stand by, Ken.â
âDarling little Clare! Going to have her cake and eat it too.â
âBut who doesnât? Weâre civilized, I hope.
