Chapter Fourteen

The people of New Romanov gathered on the walls to watch as the airship departed. Sarah Jennifer and Big Ace had made a thorough inspection of the airship to ensure everyone and everything that had left the ship was back on board before takeoff.

Sarah Jennifer called a pack meeting, then made her way to the cockpit as Archangelsk’s forest gave way to the ice shelf. She smiled to see that Enora already had the viewscreen ready, with video windows to crew quarters standing by. “Thank you, Enora. Can everyone hear me?”

Everyone confirmed they could.

Sarah Jennifer broke down the change to their route. “We’re still headed to Salem. However, we’re going to pass over Norrköping instead of the planned stop at Snøhvit. Intel from the traders indicates the geography of Östergötland is vastly different from the map data we have.”

She repressed a frown. “The reports were a little bit squirrely, to be honest. That’s why we’re rerouting. We need to assess the situation before we can make an intelligent plan of action.”

“What about the people at Snøhvit?” Brutus inquired.

“I’m going to send a team there after we get home,” Sarah Jennifer informed him. “Could be we won’t be able to move on Norrköping for a few weeks, so there will be time to make a start on building relations with them. In the meantime, our priority has to be prepping to fix the climate control system.”

There were murmurs of agreement from everyone. Katia spoke up to be heard over the others. “We were expecting something like this. Norrköping is where the ice is coming from, right?”

Sarah Jennifer seesawed her hand. “Technically, it’s coming from this whole sector. Each module is responsible for an area half a million kilometers square.”

“Stands to reason the terrain blows goats,” Linus reasoned. “Nothing we can’t handle if we train right. You taught us that.”

“We don’t know what the terrain is like,” Sarah Jennifer reminded him. “All we have is wildly contradicting hearsay. That’s why Enora and I are going to get eyes on the situation before we head back to Salem and why everyone else is going to put some time in on the VR training simulation to memorize their part in repairing the climate control module. I’ll be testing you.”

The pack groaned as one, but Sarah Jennifer had already cut the video.

Enora appeared on the viewscreen. “By ‘eyes,’ do you mean sensors?”

Sarah Jennifer smiled as she sat back in her chair to take in the whole screen. “Smart AI. What can you give me? Thermal imaging?”

“Multispectral imaging is within the capabilities of my external cameras,” Enora replied. “Ground-penetrating radar should be possible with a little adjustment.”

“Meaning?” Sarah Jennifer inquired.

“Meaning with GPR we can see what’s going on underneath the ice,” Esme interjected, walking in. “I was thinking the same thing. The sea captains all say Bråviken Bay is now Mount Bråviken. What’s our ETA?”

“Twenty minutes to Östergötland,” Enora answered.

“I’ll be back,” Esme told them. “Left my damn datapad in my cabin.”

“Release the camera drones when we get in range of the coast.
