Chapter Fifteen

Renee sat in the window seat, looking outside, hands clasped tightly. Storm’s heart stopped beating. Shuddering, she closed her eyes to stop the tears from falling and inhaled. David, Adam, and Quinn saved his life. Storm had been crystal clear about that. He sounded surprised and then grateful.

She frowned. “Daddy?”

“Hello, Princess. How’re you?”

Her frown deepened. “Storm died.”

“What?” he yelled.

“What happened, Renee?” her mom asked seconds later.

“David had an alpha challenge. Storm was there with security because there were a lot of cars. One blew up, and metal hit Storm in the chest.” She sobbed and rubbed her chest. “His heart stopped beating.”

“Princess, I’m sorry. I didn’t know.”

“Exactly. Why didn’t you know? Why didn’t you help him?” Renee asked.

“I’m not his alpha.”

Renee’s eyes widened.

“David is his alpha and would’ve sensed it first, then Adam and Quinn.”

“He said that,” Renee said.

“What?”

“All three of them saved his life. David pulled his wolf, went inside, worked on his heart, healed it, and made it beat again. Adam and Quinn were there working with David. I didn’t… didn’t understand. That’s not how it normally works,” Renee said.

“It’s the way it is now. His alpha responded and handled it. I didn’t know until you mentioned it,” her dad said.

“But isn’t he supposed to tell you?” Renee bit down on her lower lip.

“When the crisis is over, he probably will. Saving Storm’s life, ensuring the pack is okay after the explosion takes precedence. I’m proud they did what needed to be done.”

“I was so scared. Couldn’t stop screaming or crying. Storm tried to calm and reassure me in between breaths. He was dying and telling me to be strong. How the hell could I do that? Without him? Mom, I can’t even…We have babies on the way. After all this time, we’re pregnant, and this happens? I’ve never been that scared in my life. Not even when Daddy died, and you know how bad I’d gotten then.”

“That was a difficult time for all of us,” her mom said.

“I kept yelling through our link. David shut me out. I felt it and truly lost it. Nyla and Sarita sat with me while Jackie and Bella kept their links open to Adam and Quinn. That’s how I knew David was working on Storm’s heart. Which didn’t help because he’d never done that before.”

“I know, sweetheart. But he’s okay now. Your father just checked. He’s ensuring the grounds are secure before coming to you,” her mom explained.

“He told me. I swear I’ll never speak to Grandfather again. I’m converting to Christianity and turning my back on the rest of this stuff. It’s too shaky.”

“Everything will work out, you’ll see,” her mom said.

“Does this mean I’m not supposed to talk about what’s happening in our pack? Everything’s happening so fast. It’s confusing,” Renee said.

“Do not stress over this, Renee. Anytime you want to talk, you can. Have a discussion with your alpha about discussing the pack business. That way, you’ll know the lines,” her mom said.

Renee sighed. “David is my alpha.
