I spend a lot of time alone. I choose this

now. As a neglected child, it was a given.

Writing requires an abandonment of

one’s body and a traveling inward,

to the worlds where a body cannot go.

This is no loss to me.

But if one travels too far, one can forget

everything they have waiting for them—

Because magic cannot be contained, even

in a gentle hand. It becomes lonely work.

You push the knife through an apple.

You open and close the squeaky fridge door.
