14. Information and Facts About Finches

Zebra Finches

Finches are little birds belonging to the same Passeridae Group as the Sparrow and it is easy to miss spotting them, yet they are among the most popular, the most widely observed, and the most popular of pet birds in the world, especially Gold Finches. Many people would rather have a finch as a pet than a parrot or a parakeet. There is much to learn about these tiny, little happy birds.

While it is a fact that most pet birds, such as parrots and parakeets need some kind of human socialization in order to thrive in captivity, finches would rather have the company of other finches, and as far as those humans go, they could take them or leave them. They should be kept in pairs or in groups, and if they are kept individually, they can get physically and mentally unstable, to the point of becoming depressed.

It is customary to handle parrots and parakeets, but not finches. Finches would rather not be handled and they should be touched as little as possible to avoid causing them stress and frightening them. So handle the Finches as little as possible to keep them happy.

Finches are among the smallest of the small birds, only weighing less than an ounce and measuring less than 4 inches from beak to tail feathers. While some people might think that this small bird would be the perfect bird for small, cozy homes, quite the opposite is true, as you might need a bigger cage for Finches than for Parrots. Finches have to be able to fly, and the more the merrier. They really need a larger area in a cage to enable them to fly around.

Finches love to sing and chirp, but their tiny voices are so faint they make good choices for people who live in small houses or apartments. Their happy chirp cannot even be heard outside of the room in which they live, and people who have them enjoy their pleasant, happy voices.
