Chapter 13

Phoebe stared out the window, watching as the buildings went past her line of sight. She and Steven said nothing to each other all morning other than a quick goodbye when Phoebe gathered the few things she had and left. They were both hurt and angry, not really sure how to articulate the emotions that were bubbling beneath the surface. Her heart was breaking on the ride back to Avery's place, but she knew it was best. She'd worn out her welcome at Steven's anyway.

Amelia beamed as the car drove up, running out on the gravel driveway with open arms. Phoebe's face lit up too. Avery was waiting at the front door with a wheelchair. Once the car stopped, Avery swooped in, opening the car door and carrying Phoebe to it.

“You don't have to fuss over me, Ave.”

“Who's fussing?” he replied. “Thanks, Max. Let Steven know I'll be sending him some credits for his time and effort taking care of Phoebe.”

“The boss wouldn't let you do that,” said Max.

Avery looked tense and angry, but smiled and waved as Max pulled out the drive. He took both handlebars, pushing Phoebe into the house. The smell of fresh garlic and onion sauteing on the stove top filled Phoebe's nose, her stomach growling in anticipation. Gretchen always knew how to make her feel welcome.

“What do you want to do first?” asked Amelia.

“Babe, she just got here and her ankle is broken. Let's just let her rest,” said Avery.

“It's fine. Maybe we can play cards or something,” said Phoebe.

Amelia gave Phoebe an energetic nod, clapping her hands together in excitement.

“I've arranged for the detective to come here a little later this afternoon. I hope you don't mind,” said Avery.

“You're always trying to control things,” Phoebe sighed.

“Take care of. Not control. There's a difference,” he said.

Gretchen came billowing through the threshold of the living room with arms wide open. She gave Phoebe a gentle kiss on the cheek, enveloping her in a big hug.

“My girl. I missed you. I'm so glad you're okay.”

“I'm fine,” Phoebe giggled.

They all arranged themselves on the couch, eager to hear Phoebe's story. Phoebe wheeled herself into position, locking it in place. She absolutely hated being helpless and appreciated the freedom that the wheelchair afforded.

“What made you change your mind?” asked Avery.

“Wow, you get right to the point. Don't you?”

“I'm worried about you, Pheebs. It's not like you to do what Steven wants.”

“I wasn't doing what Steven wants. I was just...staying for a while. He offered so...”

“I can't imagine having to stay with Steven,” said Amelia rolling her eyes.

“Well, he was very tender and kind. I really appreciated him being there for me,” said Phoebe.

“You had a fight didn't you?” asked Avery.

“I wouldn't exactly call it that.”

“You act like I don't know you,” Avery laughed. “Steven said or did something you didn't like and you bolted.”

Phoebe looked down at her own hands. It wasn't exactly like that, but it was something close. She knew she was just looking for a reason to run.
