Infertility Treatments

I should note a few points before beginning to evaluate infertility treatments from a Christian point of view. First, I cannot address every possible option, and I will not address at all the basic medical procedures that in some cases can actually cure infertility itself (i.e., they enable a couple to conceive a child naturally). Such treatments are generally not morally difficult, since they carry out ordinary purposes of medicine: restoring the body to normal, healthy functioning. Second, I evaluate options under three basic headings: those that involve third-party parents, those that involve only husband and wife, and cloning, which involves only one parent. By pursuing the present question under these three headings, I discuss some of the most morally pertinent questions about infertility treatment, for the purpose of helping Christians to identify and to think through the important moral issues.
