Twenty-three
LIZZIE RAN DOWN THE passage. "Finley, what's wrong? Are you sick?"
Eli caught her mid-stride and pulled her back towards their bedroom. "Baby, trust me, you don't want to see this."
Liz held her ground. "Oh, come on, like I haven't held her hair back before."
I stared at them. Miserable. A putrid taste lingered in my mouth, my soul. I could wash my mouth. My soul? Never.
"Finley, what's going on? Are you sick? Do you have cramps? When last did you go to the bathroom? Any spotting? What did you eat for lunch?" Lizzie tried to yank free of Eli's hold.
He placed his hand on her face and his forehead against hers. "Finley isn't sick. This is the part of our world we don't want you to be exposed to. Ever. Please go back to the room. I didn't realiseâ"
"What? What didn't you realise?" Lizzie searched his face, then mine. I shook my head.
Eli pressed his lips to her forehead. "That she would search without me, that she would look at all." He turned his focus to me, his hands still holding on to Lizzie. "You did it for me, didn't you? More than you wanted answers."
Despite the tears trickling down my face, I smiled. "You told me."
"Told you what? What's going on?" Lizzie stepped back, staring at both Eli and I as if we were strangers. "Why are you both crying?"
My shoulders sagged. I wiped my eyes; pointless as the tears kept coming. "I'm sorry."
He shook his head. "I should've told her a long time ago."
"Told me what?" Lizzie pulled her hair away from her neck and tied it at the back of her head. Her face was red. Never a good sign.
I closed the laptop and left them to talk. Fresh air called my name.
Unpolluted air greeted me as I stepped onto the back porch. I longed for the salty breeze which greeted me every morning when Aidan opened our bedroom's sliding doors.
I kept walking, fighting off fatigue, nausea, and the pain I knew Eli felt as he told Lizzie the only thing I knew about him she didn't. To my knowledge.
While I had been in hospital, after the incident with the Scarecrows, an incident which saw me dying twice and Aidan saving my life twice, Eli had taught me the art of hacking. More a case of me bullying him into it than him waking up one morning and deciding that that would be his greatest accomplishment of the day. I had played the 'I'm so bored, I'm getting up and walking out of here' card. Fact â I had been bored to the point of questioning my sanity. Fact â I couldn't sit without help, let alone walk.
With my newly acquired skill, I set out to test it, and hacked the Marcel Police Department's records. Curiosity is more of a challenge to me than a death sentence. I'm no cat. I read the files the police had compiled on The Hangman. And Eli calls me sexist?
