It’s still on my mind when I drag my jet-lagged ass out of bed. I fucking forgot to text my dear, fake wife.

Thing is, we hit the ground running when the plane hit the tarmac, and not because I fucked up by fucking her and being fucking late. No, shit was already flying through the air before our arrival.

Our little side venture slipping sideways.

Not a big deal in the grand scheme of things, but the skittishness of the people we were working with was out of character, and one look at Grainger’s face during the first meetup and his spectacular lack of expression said my gut instinct wasn’t wrong on outside forces at work.

Still, we ironed things out, soothed feathers, and now we’re back on track.

But it’s something I’m going to have to dig into today, here.

The tiny digital footprints we found in the work there are those of hackers. Not me. Not Grainger. Not the people we met. I’m thinking it might be the group Harper’s interested in, stirring all kinds of pots. Or eyeing me.

The last one does not make me happy.

They shouldn’t know what the fuck I was up to in Prague. And, as I dress for the day in jeans and a sweater, I decide they probably don’t.

Whoever these little idiots are, this is what they do when they’re not causing big trouble—play at being imps in the code, as I call that kind of thing. It’s nothing big, but it can make others nervous that someone’s going to bring them down.

And, considering the legalities, or lack thereof, of that part of the work in Prague … yeah, I don’t blame our colleagues for getting antsy.

The rest of the work was a deal I wanted and got. Cutting edge security tech that is perfect for Helix. We can do a lot with it on various levels.

Of course, now my day is a wall of work, but the silver lining is work from home, no meetings, no press. Except, of course, for Harper, who is as mad as hell at me.

Fuck. It’s all a little over the top, but … I like it. Her fury strokes my ego, because it tells me everything she doesn’t want me to know.

She wants me. She missed me.

We will be fucking again. I know that.

I grab my phone and head to the kitchen. It’s going to be a long work session, and the days of existing on pizza and energy drinks are far behind me. What I need is a smoothie that will last the day, and through to when I have to do the dutiful son dance this evening, which should be fine as long as Harper plays the good, loving bride.

She can do it perfectly. I have seen her. It’s a thing of beauty.

But she’s fucking furious.

Then again, she’s not going to rock the boat, because if she does, I can withdraw support from dear Piper. I won’t, but she doesn’t know that.

For that reason—her being willing to play without any kind of coercion—and that reason alone, I regret not texting her.
