I didn’t want to wait for my driver to get the car from the garage to go see Cat. Instead I practically raced down to the lobby and hailed a cab right from the sidewalk. Ten minutes after her phone call, I was walking through the gate of the Dakota, Cat’s overly-ornamented historic building.

I made it through the gauntlet of security guards, doorman and elevator operator only to knock on the door and face Cat’s housekeeper, a short middle-aged woman with gray hair, who looked something like a dumpling. She peered up at me with eyes like little raisins while leading me to Cat’s office, as if she could read my secrets, and for a moment I wondered if she could actually see them. I kept my face as emotionless as possible.

“My name is Magda, Mr. Kent. Please wait here. Ms. Lockhart will be with you in a few minutes.” She gestured for me to have a seat in one of a pair of white upholstered, curved leg armchairs. I liked that Cat had gone back to her maiden name after her husband died, it felt like a sign that she hadn’t been all that attached to him. “May I get you a cup of coffee or anything else, Mr. Kent?” she said, with impeccable manners, although her piercing eyes seemed to dissect me.

“Black please.” She nodded and backed out of the room, closing the door with barely a sound. I looked around.

I had never been in this building and certainly never been in this apartment, although I knew Cat had grown up here. Even when we were secret friends, it was only on Haven Isle and I never would have been allowed into the sanctum of the Lockhart family home.

It was a very feminine office, with dark parquet floors and a pale silk carpet that I recognized as a Persian antique, practically museum quality, and pale, French country furnishings. The walls were painted a creamy white and the floor-to-ceiling bookcases were a fog gray. The room was soothing and formal, with warm gold accents. It looked like her. The thought of her made me smile - This woman, the mother of my child, also my archenemy, who I was in love with. It was a dilemma that I hadn’t figured out what to do with yet, but I did know I needed to see her.

By now, the news that my father’s murderer had been found was public knowledge, but I had kept Cat’s connection with the plot a secret. I wouldn’t be able to keep it quiet for long, I knew, but I felt like I owed it to her to tell her first, and in person.

I stood to look at the books, mostly classics. I recognized a great number of Pulitzer prize winners, all the most serious of books. I kind of wished I would find a bunch of pulp science fiction novels, or some of those sexy vampire stories, something that would put a chink in her perfect ice facade.
