Weber walked up to Archer’s car where Tommy Frost and Buz were slapping him on the back and congratulating him for his quick thinking. Weber said, “Damned good work, Deputy! You may well have saved all of our asses.”

Archer, a man who received very little praise, beamed at his coworkers and the sheriff’s words. When his father joined the sheriff and Parks at his car, he may have hoped for more, but Chet Wingate had other important things on his mind.

“Sheriff, if you want to keep your job you need to get a handle on things, and you need to do it fast! This town is out of control and we’ll be the laughingstock of the whole state if this doesn’t stop. I won’t have it, do you hear me?”

Weber looked at his watch and said, “You’re slowing down, Chet. It’s almost ten o’clock and you’ve only threatened to fire me twice so far. Are you feeling okay?”

“Now you listen to me,” the mayor said. “I want….

Weber was usually able to ignore the pompous little man’s outbursts, but the day was off to a bad start, and he just didn’t have the patience this morning.

“Don’t you get it yet, Chet? I don’t give a rat’s ass what you want. I’ve got more important things to do than listen to you all day long. Now get out of my sight before I borrow that Apache’s knife and scalp you myself!”

The mayor’s face turned a dangerous hue. Maybe after seeing his son break up a riot singlehandedly, he believed anything was possible, and that the sheriff really would lift his scalp. Whatever the reason, he stalked off, warning Weber over his shoulder that he was going to bring the entire matter before the Town Council for review.
