Chapter Twelve

Luna was vibrating with anxiety by the time I joined her for dinner.

Actually vibrating. She’d only done that once before when we’d been menaced by an ill-tempered centaur. Eventually, I’d worked out the misunderstanding with my then-boss and come away with only a knot on my head from the confrontation.

This incident was arguably worse because my employer couldn’t oust the responsible party from the premises. And as to the responsible party, I still had no idea what had tried to drown me. The wounds were only getting more tender with time, though Beaumont’s spit had healed the smallest cuts already. The punctures on my calves weren’t quite as lucky—they were still swelling and a shiny red ring had formed around their edges. I wasn’t sure who to turn to if they got infected. What would I tell a mundane doctor about what they were or how I’d gotten them? No doubt it was a magical creature who had attacked me, which meant a mundane doctor wouldn’t even know where to begin. Furthermore, was a magically induced infection something mundane antibiotics could even handle? What if I’d managed to contract some new, supernatural strain of necrotizing fasciitis? Was it something I could heal myself?

I kept my worries to myself. Luna had enough of a burden without adding my anxiety to it as well. I forced a smile when Smith deposited me in the chair next to hers. Typha returned my smile with a tight grin of her own. The strained expression looked alien on her plump, cheerful face. Luna must have been a holy terror while I was gone. I’d have to think of some way to make things up to Typha when I was back on my feet.

“See, Luna?” Typha said, her voice a gentle contrast to the look on her face. “Your mother is just fine. Now stop rattling like dice in a can, dear. You’re going to spill your Étouffée on the nice, clean floor.”

“But Mama was hurt!” Luna wailed, lunging across the table toward me. Yasmine jumped out of her way just before she would have been squashed.

Typha interposed her body between us in a flash of a second, seemingly prepared for Luna to do just that, and managed to wrestle her back into her chair. It only made Luna wail louder, drawing furtive glances from the workers seated at the tables around us. On an ordinary day, the attention would have made me self-conscious, but at the moment, I was grateful the ancient faerie was willing to act as a cushion, keeping my daughter’s weight off my injured legs. Because much though I wanted to hug my daughter, I was afraid she’d hurt me if she came at me full bore like she just had.

“It’s okay, Luna,” I said in a soft voice, hoping to placate her as I reached over and took her hand. “I’m just a little bit hurt, but I’m getting better.”

Smith moved to Luna’s other side, reaching out and taking her shoulder in a soft grip.
