Chapter Six

JULIAN

Even when I don’t mean to force Catalina, even when I expect nothing, I can’t help but lie awake. The clock strikes midnight, and I force my eyes shut, again and again, trying to fall asleep.

Impossible when every creak in the house makes me think of her. Impossible when I wonder about her whereabouts. Is she sleeping? What is she wearing? Is she dreaming of me?

My imagination filled with ideas, with wishes, I can’t relax. I keep repeating that old mantra — she’s too young, too vivacious, I’m too old, too big — but it changes nothing.

Nothing else matters to my heart. Only her.

The floorboards outside my bedroom door creak. I tense, every muscle in my body growing taut. God, I shouldn’t hope for it to be her. This has to be my imagination. I can’t keep expecting something that will never happen.

The creaks sound closer. I hold my breath. God, why does it feel like I’m a teenager again?

A knock. Is it here? My heart skips a beat. I wait. There’s no way it’s here. The knock repeats itself. I shoot to my feet, striding across my room, shirtless and in my pajama pants, heart racing. I grip the doorknob and almost expect a ghost to be standing outside the door when I open it.

Catalina’s big eyes gape back at me. She chews on her bottom lip, cheeks painted pink. I take a long once-over of her curvaceous body, her juicy form half-hidden by a purple teddy. Her thick thighs are exposed, creamy white in the moon's light spilling through my windows. God, I want her. So bad. And I can read it fine in her eyes, from the way they glitter when she studies my chest, to how she licks her plump lips in hunger.

She wants me too. And there’s no way I’ll keep my hands off her tonight.

Like a gunshot, our restraints snap. She comes at me at the same time I hug her to my chest. These days, the torture building up, it all explodes in a mountain of arousal. She cranes her neck at me as I dig my hands into her soft hair, and our lips collide.

She tastes like heaven and smells like it too. Sliding my lips against hers, I feel her body everywhere. Folding an arm around her waist, I bring her higher against me, diluting the height difference. She gasps, then slings her arms around my neck. Her legs connect behind me, and I fit my cock against her covered core as if we’re two puzzle pieces.

“Cat,” I call against her mouth, holding her so tightly against me I’m surprised she doesn’t feel pain. “My beautiful Cat. What are you doing here?”

She breathes out a sigh but says nothing. Instead, she shoots a glance at the empty hallway, and I read what she wants as if it’s my own desire. Stepping inside the room, I shut the door behind us and walk her to the bed. Propping a knee on the mattress, I gently lay her down.
