Chapter Six

MOLLY

“Everything going well at the bakery, Molly?” my dad asks. We’ve all just sat down to eat dinner—we as in myself, my two sisters, and my parents.

I nod as I take a piece of roasted chicken from the serving platter in front of me. “Mmhmm. Business is good.”

“I was telling the other hygienists about your cakes today,” says my older sister, Samara. She works in a dental office. “So if you have an extra busy week, you have me to thank.”

I laugh as I pass the chicken to her. “Thanks, Sam.”

“Have you made a pink champagne bundt cake yet?” asks my younger sister, Amie.

“Nope, but it’s on my to-do list,” I tell her.

“Oh! I came up with another idea the other day, too,” says Amie, lifting her fork up in the air. “Caramel apple coffee cake. Doesn’t that sound amazing? I bet it would be a best seller.”

“Sounds like you should start baking, too, sweetie,” our mom says. “Are you looking to hire some help anytime soon, Molly?”

“Hmm.” I drum my fingers on my chin. “I guess I could use an unpaid intern…”

“Unpaid?!” Amie scoffs.

I nudge my little sister’s foot beneath the table. “I’m only kidding, Ames. I’ll happily pay you if you want to come work at the bakery.”

I’m not sure if Amie is serious about coming to work for me, but even if she’s not, it means a lot to me that she and the rest of my family have shown so much love and support for the bakery. I doubt I would have accomplished all that I have without their help. When I was first getting ready to open the shop, my sisters and parents were there to help me with everything, from repainting the space to giving me feedback about the logo to even standing out on the sidewalk on the day of the grand opening handing out flyers and encouraging passersby to come inside.

“Hey, Mol,” says Samara. “I’ve been meaning to ask. What’s in the shopping bag you brought with you? You get anything cute?”

“I bought a dress,” I say. “It’s for that high school reunion that I’m going to with my friend Hudson.”

My sisters exchange glances.

“Right,” says Amie. “Your friend Hudson. Why don’t you just call him your boyfriend, Mol?”

“Because he’s not my boyfriend,” I say, shooting her a look as I help myself to another sourdough roll. “Like I’ve told you guys before, it’s purely platonic.”

“I saw you two the other day, you know,” says my mom, smiling over the lip of her wine glass. “I was out running errands and I saw you walking with him and his dog.”

“Why didn’t you say hi?” I ask.

“Oh, I didn’t want to interrupt. You two were in the middle of a conversation and looked all lovey-dovey…”

“Stop,” I say, sighing. “Please stop.”

“All right, all right,” she says. “But just for the record, he’s a very handsome man. You know we can add a chair to the dining table any time, right? Even if he just comes to dinner as a ‘friend.
