The first book to roll off the Gutenberg printing press was the Bible. No one knows how many Gutenberg printed, but some guess he produced at least 180 volumes. Some of Gutenberg’s Bibles still exist today.

The printing press made it possible for individuals to read the ideas of other people. It also provided a way to share news and information. Some religious and political leaders feared such information and ideas would threaten their hold on power. They were right. The ideas of philosophers, priests, politicians, and others gained a wide audience around the world because of the printing press. In many cases, those ideas started revolutions, as some people tried to change the way they lived and the way their governments worked.
