Chapter 21

ELLISON

“What are we doing at one of my stores again?” I asked curiously as Kassie handed me a basket.

She hooked one over her own arm as well, then led me farther into the shop. “I didn’t think you’d want to support the competition and we need to pick up some things for Dom.”

“Okay, but I could’ve just had Eleanor send for it if you’d have told me what we needed,” I said. “There’s a massive Crowne store on the ground level of our headquarters, in case you haven’t seen it.”

“I haven’t actually come in through the lobby,” she explained. “Alec arranged for parking for me, so I’ve been coming into the building from the garage, but I knew the store was there.”

“So why are we here then?” I asked as I looked around the cavernous space. “I’ve never been inside this store before, though. It’s nice. Huge, but nice.”

Kassie glanced at me over her shoulder. She was smiling, but she also looked mildly confused. “How have you never been in here? Even I’ve been in here. It’s one of your flagship stores in the city, isn’t it?”

I shrugged. “I guess so, but I’ve never had a reason to visit. Are you ever going to answer my question about why we’re here now?”

“I’ve already told you,” she said. “We’re here to pick up things Dom needs. Theoretically, you don’t need to change him, but we’re getting some diapers and all the goodies that go along with it anyway. Just because it’s not something you strictly need to do doesn’t mean it’s not something you should do.”

“Why?”

She looked at me with humor in her eyes when she stopped and waited for me to catch up. “What happened to you being willing to do anything I ask of you for today?”

I slung an arm over her shoulder, grinning as I pulled her close. “I’m still willing, but I really don’t understand why we’re doing this.”

“Because pushing some buttons doesn’t count as getting the full experience,” she said, wrapping her fingers around my forearm and giving it a squeeze before shaking me off her. “We probably shouldn’t be seen together like that in public. Arm’s length, okay?”

“Fine,” I mock-pouted, but I understood where she was coming from, so I dropped the act. “What are you expecting me to do to get the ‘full experience’ then?”

“We’re going to buy you diapers and a bottle, some clothes, blankets, and some other basics. If Dom needs to be changed, you’re going to change him. When he needs to be fed, you’re going to get his bottle. You’re also going to have to make sure he’s dressed every day. I’m sure you get the gist of it.”

“Basically, you want me to treat him like a real baby,” I concluded, and she nodded. Releasing a soft sigh, I went to stand behind her in front of a massive wall of diaper boxes. “I’m not saying no, but this seems a bit like a waste of money, doesn’t it?”

“It’s an important part of learning what it takes to have a baby,” she said.
