Chapter Twenty

Ben was so tired he could barely think straight. He eased down onto his son’s bed, feeling like an old man as he groaned with each move he made. Between work and his house renovations, he had clocked a ton of hours this week. Now he was paying for it because his body felt as if he had gone several rounds with Floyd Mayweather and lost.

Jayden strolled into the bedroom and handed Ben his cell phone. Lenay had called a few minutes ago to talk to their son. Seemed she’d been calling more frequently. Which was good since she hadn’t visited lately.

“Daddy, can I take my PlayStation to Uncle Jerry’s house?” Jayden asked and sat on the bed.

Ben was a little surprised that his son didn’t say anything about the phone call with his mother but didn’t comment on it. “No. We don’t have time to unhook it from the TV. Besides, Jerry has a gaming console. I’m sure you guys can play with it.”

“But Stormy always beats me on that one. I want to beat her this time. That’s why I need my own game.”

Ben chuckled. Stormy, Jerry’s oldest daughter, was a beast with video games. Her cuteness was a camouflage that hid her competitive nature. It didn’t matter what gaming system she played on, she won.

“Not this time, son.” Ben stood slowly, wincing with each move.

He couldn’t wait to take a long, hot shower before his date tonight. He moved across the room to Jayden’s walk-in closet and grabbed the Disney World duffel bag from the top shelf. “Jerry is going to pick you up soon. We need to hurry and pack.”

Jayden fell back on the bed and stared at the ceiling. “You’re not taking me over there? You always take me.”

“I don’t have time because Mahogany is coming over for dinner.”

Jayden popped up. “Is Bella coming too? I don’t want to go to Uncle Jerry’s. I want to stay here.”

“No, she’s not coming, and no you can’t stay.” Ben removed a blue jogging suit from the dresser drawer and stuffed it in the bag. “Did you have a good conversation with your mother?” Ben finally asked. Normally, Jayden was nearby when he chatted on the phone with her, but Ben had left him in the family room to talk.

“Yes. Mommy asked what I’ve been doing. I told her Bella is my best friend and that you and Aunt MoMo, I mean, Ms. Mahogany took us roller skating.”

Jayden turned to him and grinned, and Ben couldn’t help but chuckle. He already knew what was coming next.

“Remember when Ms. Mahogany kept falling?” his son said, then cracked up laughing.

Ben couldn’t help but join in. Mahogany on skates could easily become a meme. Despite her efforts, she couldn’t stay upright for more than five minutes. Between her arms windmilling and her legs going in different directions, she made quite the sight.

Bella and Jayden thought it was the funniest thing they’d ever seen. Mahogany had been the star attraction and, no doubt, the topic of conversation for many on the way home.
