Summary

In Romans 9 – 11 Paul argues that the story of Israel demonstrates that God has been faithful to his Word and his people. He first reaches into Israel’s past to demonstrate that there never was a strict correspondence between ethnic Israel and the children of God. ‘Israel’ in the true sense has always been defined by God’s own merciful call. Paul then focuses his attention on the present state of Israel in which many of the Gentiles have experienced God’s merciful call, but only a remnant of the Jews are being saved. It is a tragic irony that the Gentiles have believed in the gospel of Jesus Christ while the Jews have not. This hardening of Israel fulfils Isaiah’s prophecy that God would establish the Messiah as a stone of stumbling, and yet it was also hidden as part of the ‘mystery’ of God’s merciful plan to bring the Gentiles into the people of God and eventually show mercy to ethnic Israel as well. Thus, when Paul says that not all of ethnic Israel is a part of theological Israel, he certainly does not mean that God has rejected or replaced his people. Rather, Israel’s disobedience has brought God’s mercy to the Gentiles, which will also lead to God’s mercy to the Jews as they turn to faith in Jesus Christ. Thus, the story of Israel is a story of the glory of God displayed in his mercy towards disobedient Jews and Gentiles: ‘To him be the glory for ever! Amen’ (Rom. 11:36b).
